Gordon Ramsay in Malaysia

Check this out. Gordon Ramsay in Malaysia on Vimeo. Pretty good video and rather funny. Naturally as a Malaysian, I MUST comment on my...disagreement with some things and add a few details to fill you in. Click on the link below to watch the clip. Because it's not on YouTube I can't show a preview here.

Gordon Ramsay in Malaysia from Joseph Teo on Vimeo.

Why he didn't spend more time in Penang I don't know. He didn't even go to Malacca for the Nyonya food. Anyway, what Gordon said is true. You can't pin point and put it down to one thing that makes it Malaysian cuisine. It is a big melting pot of everything which makes it a never ending culinary journey. I am a bit disappointed in a couple of things though. The Indian food part would have been better if he had gone to mamak stalls for Roti Canai, all sorts of curries etc. And how can he not try "Teh tarik" (pulled tea). Come on, videoing the guy making it is fascinating in itself.

My recommendation for vegetarian food is to try the Chinese vegetarian food. It's so amazing you won't even know it's vegetarian. Lastly, bird's nest is expensive and valuable mostly for it's perceived nutritional value. Also, the Chinese make a better bird's nest broiled dessert. It isn't merely sugar and water so there was a bit of a mis-representation there. Shame. All in all a good clip to watch. I believe he had limited time. The next stop is no doubt Singapore. Can't wait to see what they stole from us and claim to be Singaporean. Ha!

Noodle Kingdom

Went to Noodle Kingdom on Saturday night after watching Wicked. Wasn't really hungry but was in the mood for some cheap  affordable Chinese food. It was very satisfying and it's making me hungry right now.
Cumin spiced beef skewers

Home style braised tofu with pork and garlic shoots
Not a bad place to go if you're looking for a quick cheap eat. Service is fast and menu is extensive. Portions are also quite big.

A variety of noodle soup and rice dishes are available (beef brisket, pork, spicy shredded pork etc.). The noodles are freshly hand made and taste wonderful. They also offer pan-fried or steamed dumplings and "xiao long bao", a popular Shanghainese type of dumpling. You will also find a lot of chilli dishes like "Chicken stir fried with chilli and peanuts" and "Spicy lamb stew".

On the last page you will find some cold dishes which could be ordered as sides or appetizers like Grilled Eggplant, Pickle and Peas, Pig Tripe, Seaweed Salad and more for around $4.

A few pages from the menu. Pictures make it easy to know what to order.

Wicked!

Today we went to watch Wicked and it was wickedly awesome. First time I've ever seen it and I really enjoyed it. A very good musical. I can see why it's so successful. During the interval we spotted some green slushie thing at the bar. Turns out it was an Ozmopolitan. It was actually quite nice. Pineapple, kiwi and daiquiri.

Unfortunately we didn't have much time left after visiting the bathroom and queuing at the bar so we had to drink it pretty fast and boy did it give us brain freeze. Went back in feeling quite....happy.

Delhi Spice

Tonight we tried out an Indian dine in and takeaway place which has been recommended by a few people. Even though it's on a main road it is quite camouflaged. Though it may not be much to look at, the food certainly tastes very good. The prices are also very attractive with the average main sitting at $9-$10.

Delhi Spice, 271A Oaklands Road, Marion. I would definitely give it a go. I'm pretty sure it is also free corkage on BYOs.

Clockwise: Tandoori chicken, beef madras and lamb rogan josh

Cheese naan (Carl couldn't resist tearing a piece off)

Slap it all on a plate

Thanks Delhi Spice for an enjoyable meal!

Memory of a good time

I believe I am currently in a food drought. Maybe it should be starvation but I'm not exactly starving. Just eating a lot of junk and crap instead of nice proper meals. I was going through some photos and recipes last night and brought about some memories. I also wish I had taken more and better photos of food I have made or tasted (note to self: always remember to charge camera).

This was my fridge the morning of our housewarming and that's just half the stuff. There was a lot more in the laundry room and on the kitchen bench.

Half set-up. ETA of guests, 1 hour.

+
Chocolate brownies, truffle, hedgehog slice and caramel slice. Calories, calories, calories!

My favourite party snack. Cocktail sausages, cucumber, tomato and bocconcini.
The candy and choccies in the background for the neighbour's kids.

It was actually real good fun preparing for it all. Tiring but good fun. A really good turnout, went on all evening and we all had an amazing time. Thanks guys!!

Hello world

So, on this rainy day I have decided to fill my time with a new hobby. Blogging. The food part is not new. I have always been interested in food, both eating and making it. What better to do than write about the one thing I have consistently loved all this time. As I venture on my food trail I hope to be able to share restaurant and eatery reviews, recipes and lots of pictures of yummy food.
