Kenji Modern Japanese @ Hutt Street
There's always talk about fusion food and Kenji Modern Japanese Restaurant might just be a great example of east meets west. Situated on Hutt Street this small restaurant probably seats about 50 to 60 and offers an interesting menu of entrees, mains, desserts and sushi. The restaurant is dimly lit, decor is warm and inviting though the space itself is a little bit cramped. A friend who loves Japanese food visited from Melbourne so the four of us had an enjoyable night catching up over a long dinner.

We decided to skip the sushi and do the three course meal instead so for entree I ordered Kingfish with Ponzu and Tangerine Salad $18. The fish was cooked perfectly and the tangerine salad was actually a good complement.

I've never had puffer fish before and always wanted to try it. This dish is a great choice for anyone who wants to try it because you can taste the different styles of cooking and textures. The fried fish pieces were tender and moist though not very crispy. The pufferfish tataki (seared & thin sliced) with spring onion and dipping sauce was tender and quite a delight. The fish itself doesn't really taste like fish and the texture is rather chewy, more like meat. I didn't get to try the fish skin jelly.

Next came the mains which we were quite excited about because the menu description is indeed interesting and I quite liked the twists they have introduced to each dish.
Poached Duck Leg in Orange and Japanese Hoji Tea-Smoked Duck Breast with Fragrant Red Rice and Asian Greens $33
I am a fan of duck and this dish was delicious, a little bit too salty for my liking but delicious. The poached duck leg was tender with citrus flavours cutting through the richness. The tea smoked duck breast was perfectly cooked and very tender but the tea flavour was very mild.

Wagyu Sirloin Steak with Shiitake Mushrooms, Radish Salad and Teriyaki Jus $37. This was my friend's order which he enjoyed very much.
Tuna Special - Seared Tuna and Grilled King prawns $35
The tuna and prawns were cooked perfectly but otherwise nothing to rave on about. The portion was disappointing considering what the rest of us got so I felt a bit bad for my friend.

Vegetarian Bento Box - Assorted Sushi, Soba Noodle Salad, Grilled Pumpkin and Mushrooms and Tofu served with Miso Soup and Rice $32
|Pannacotta with Walnut and Fruit Sorbet|
Pannacotta with Walnut and Fruit Sorbet $12.50 - The pannacotta was very smooth and I loved the presentation.
|Green Tea Pudding|
If you like green tea like we do, you'll love this dish. Moist gooey pudding with ice cream and cream is always a winner. If you don't want too much green tea flavour you can opt for vanilla ice cream instead. Oh and who doesn't like fairy floss!
It was a great night catching up with old friends. Overall the meal was good but the prices are definitely up there.
